What Gruene Hall is actually like

Built in 1878, the hall has never been air conditioned or renovated into something slicker. Long wooden benches, a sawdust floor, string lights and side flaps that open to the yard.

Afternoon sets are often free and casual. Evening shows with touring acts sell tickets in advance and fill fast on weekends. Cash still moves faster at the bar than cards.

Spending the afternoon in the district

The surrounding blocks hold antique shops, a winery tasting room, a general store and a handful of restaurants with porch seating above the Guadalupe.

It is walkable end to end in twenty minutes, which makes it a good stop before or after a river float.

Practical tips

Parking is limited on weekend evenings. Arrive before the headliner or park at the far lot and walk in.

Shows are usually all ages during the day and often 21 and up at night. Check the schedule before you plan around a specific act.

Getting there from The Mercer

Gruene sits about two miles from our condos in Freiheit Village, a five to ten minute drive depending on traffic. That short distance is the reason many of our guests do an evening in Gruene and still get the kids to bed at a reasonable hour.
